I have since been involved in more of these mysterious failed IE reinstalls and the experiences recorded below have not been consistent. I have to admit now there is another random element to what is going on here. Not all of the updates were successfully uninstalled.”Ī quick fix was to run Microsoft’s Fix It from How to uninstall or remove Internet Explorer 9 when the standard uninstallation process does not work. The following error was encountered: “ Windows Update. Since I’m at it, I also had a couple hiccups trying to uninstall these dysfunctional IE 9 setups. After a restart, I ran the installer and it was successful. I selected each of the three (it was late and I didn’t want to remove 1, reboot, repeat). Perhaps one of these updates was throwing off the IE 9 installer. I suppose this behavior is expected since uninstalling IE 9 rolls back to IE 8. I focused on Microsoft Windows updates and found three installed updates after the removal of IE 9. ![]() This can be done via Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features > Installed Updates. Instead, I decided to look at any recently installed updates on the workstation. The identities of the manifests are identical but their contents are different.” The security fix I applied in the first case didn’t help. Looking up the error status code, we see the same verbose as the WUSA error encountered earlier: “ ERROR_SXS_MANIFEST_IDENTITY_SAME_BUT_CONTENTS_DIFFERENT. In fact, the failed install was logged as an Information event: “ Package 982861 failed to be changed to the Installed state. Looking in the Event > Setup logs did not reveal the same verbose type of error. In another case, the reinstall failed with the same generic error first encountered. So, I have been uninstalling and reinstalling several dysfunctional instances of IE 9. Afterwards, I run the installer for IE 9 again and it installs. Perhaps I can get something by just copying the unique bit of the error: “ The identities of the manifest are identical but there contents are different.” A search leads me to a different MS product, SQL 2012, but what the hell: FIX: Error message when you install SQL Server 2012: "The identities of the manifests are identical but their contents are different.” I install the recommended update for Microsoft Visual C 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package ATL Security Update. But this is still better than a generic error message. The verbose portion of the error is, I admit, cryptic, and I’m still left scratching my head. You should see a error under the source of WUSA ( Windows Update Stand Alone installer): As a result, when you install it and it fails, you can find update specific events in the Setup logs. The thing you should know about IE 9 is that it is considered an update. Maybe the Windows Event Viewer might reveal something more verbose. I wasn’t so lucky, however, and was left scratching my head. One reboot later I ran the IE 9 installer and encountered the generic Windows Internet Explorer 9 failure message: “ Internet Explorer did not finish installing…” To remove IE 9, you go to the Program Features > View installed updates and locate the IE 9 install under Microsoft Windows. While troubleshooting some bizarre behavior in IE, I decided the only way to fix the problem was to uninstall IE 9 and reinstall it. Crashing Config Manager Client
